About Heat Pumps
Heat Pumps are a renewable heating technology which help developers and property owners achieve renewable energy targets, provide high levels of efficiency and reduce running costs for the building occupiers and are suitable for new build properties or retro-fit into existing buildings.
How heat pumps work
Heat pumps work by absorbing renewable heat from the environment. This can be the atmosphere, the ground or a watercourse and the heat pump then upgrades this into a usable heat through a cycle of four steps;
- Compression – A refrigerant vapour is compressed to raise it’s temperature to a usable level.
- Condensing – This vapour then passes through a condenser where it turns to a liquid and transfers its heat so it can be delivered into the buildings heat distribution network as either hot water or hot air.
- Expansion – This now liquid refrigerant is allowed to expand.
- Evaporation – This low temperature liquid absorbs renewable heat and from the environment and turns into a vapour for the cycle to start again.
Different types of heat pumps
The two most common types of heat pump installation either absorb renewable heat from the ground using a ground source heat pump (GSHP), or the air using a air source heat pump (ASHP).
Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)
A air source heat pump is one of the simplest and least disruptive of renewable heat technologies to install, as the ASHP is delivered to site connected to electrical and heating connections and this is the installation complete. As an air source heat pumps uses fans to blow ambient air from the atmosphere over a heat exchanger for the heat pump to absorb renewable heat from the atmosphere.
Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs)
A ground source heat pump uses pipes laid into the ground as either horizontal runs up and down the land where space is available or vertically up and down bore holes where space is limited. This type of installation can require considerable ground works but as the renewable heat in the ground is often higher than the ambient air temperature when heating is required ground source heat pumps are usually more efficient than air source heat pumps. The temperature in the ground is also more consistent through out the year so the efficiency and running costs are more predictable.
Water Source Heat Pumps (WSHPs)
Finally a third type of heat pump installation that is less common is using a watercourse such as a lake or a river, the installation is very similar to a ground source heat pumps installation in that pipes are laid over a large surface area to adsorb renewable heat but this type of installation does not require as much groundwork’s or digging as the pipes are just attached to weights and sunk into the water.
