Calculate what size biogas plant you could have.

You can never know exactly what size anaerobic digestion biogas plant is suitable for you with out taking samples of your potential feedstocks, and analysing the potential volumes available. However, below is a guide using industry standards for estimating what size plant is suitable for you. 

  1. First how much biogas can you produce per tonne of potential feedstock. 
    • To find this out a sample is taken and sent of to a lab for a BMP test, (bio methane potential test). This test tells us how much biogas or methane is available per tonne of sample feedstock.
    • This is the important part, becuase it tells us exactly ow much fuel you have available per tonne of material.It is important not to confuse biogas and methane (CH4) as biogas typically only contains around 60% methane (CH4).
    • The methane content is what we are more interested in as this is what we can use as fuel in a combined heat and power engine. 
  2. Second step is to analyse how much feed stock you have available to use in an anaerobic digestion plant. 
    • Some farms may have information on the amount of slurry produced a year.
    • Alternatively we can make an estimate from the milk yield of the cows, using standard industry figures.
  3. Final and third step is to know the efficiency of the proposed combined heat and power engine. 
    • OMNI Heat & Power use engines from Cummins, alternators from Stamford, Exhaust Heat Exchanger from EJBowman and Engine Controllers from Deep Sea. All widely reconised and available components which together form a Combined Heat & Power Engine (CHP).
    • Electrical efficiency for any combined heat and power engine is usually around 35%, the exact efficiency can vary depending on load factor and also engine size.

Now we have all these three variables, we can use this to calculate what size plant is suitable for your farm.
